Port Freeport Commission Honored by AFP-Texas with Lone Star Governance Award for Zero Tax Rate Achievement

This Thursday (September 25th, 2025), Americans for Prosperity – Texas will present the Lone Star Governance Award to the Port Freeport Commission, recognizing their outstanding leadership in reducing their tax rate to zero.

Port Freeport is now the only taxing entity in the region to achieve a zero tax rate – an accomplishment made possible by a commitment to good governance, fiscal responsibility, and prioritizing the community first.

“This award highlights what’s possible when leaders put taxpayers first,” said Joel Castro, Gulf Coast Grassroots Engagement Director for Americans for Prosperity – Texas. “The Port Freeport Commission’s work is a model of accountability and fiscal stewardship that should inspire other governing bodies across Texas.”

As part of AFP-TX’s broader property tax reform efforts, recognizing and celebrating examples of effective governance is essential. The Port Freeport Commission’s achievement demonstrates how local leaders can deliver real wins for taxpayers while strengthening communities.
